Born in 1982, Umut, the eldest child of a Kurdish immigrant family, grew up in Vienna Brigittenau. After attending Vienna Business School, Umut started studying International Development, Religious Studies and Education. Over time he started focusing more and more on the production of his short films and eventually began working in the Austrian film industry. Starting in 2006, Umut studied Directing at Filmacademy Vienna under Peter Patzak and Michael Haneke. In 2011 his diploma film «PAPA» won the First Steps Award for best medium length film. Also in 2011, WEGA-Film («The White Ribbon», «Amour») produced his first feature film «Kuma», which served as the opening film of the Panorama section at the 2012 Berlin International Film Festival. His second feature film «Cracks in Concrete» was shown as part of the Panorama Special section at the 2014 Berlin International Film Festival. Since then he has directed several TV movies and TV shows in Austria and Germany. His movies have played in cinemas around the globe and have won several prizes at international film festivals.
