The Last German

The Last German (film, in development)

If it was up to Alfred Schmidt (89), he would avoid any contact with his fellow human beings. But that's not that easy in his house, where today his neighbours are mostly Arabs, Kurds, Turks and Eastern Europeans. The former successful author was never able to leave the war behind, lives a dull, socially isolated life and earns some money as a janitor and proofreader. He doesn't even want to permit the affection of the house cat, which follows him around through the whole house.

When he learns that his beloved house is going to be torn down, Alfred loses his will to live and tries to kill himself. But when his 71-year-old Turkish neighbour Leyla, for whom Alfred has had feelings secretely for a long time, tells him that she doesn't want to leave the house either, Alfred gets active. Together with the 17-year-old Afro-German Kawasaki, who has her own interest in saving the house, he makes the perfect plan to stop the demolition of the house. But for the plan to succeed, Alfred finally has to deal with his past, not only with the traumatic events of his time in the Hitler Youth but also with old relationships he could never really get closure with. Alfred manages to open up more and more and he also gets closer to Leyla. In his old age Alfred experiences what it means to love again and he even pulls out his old typewriter and starts writing down his story.
